INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANIZATION (ICAO) GLOBAL DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT CONFERENCE HELD IN ISTANBUL, TURKEY (28/6 – 1/7/2022)

The International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Global Implementation Support Symposium was held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from June 28 to July 1, 2022, and was hosted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Türkiye.

The event brought together ICAO’s World Aviation Forum (IWAF), the Global Aviation Cooperation Symposium (GACS) and the Global Aviation Training Symposium and TRAINAIR PLUS. The purpose of bringing together these events is to highlight the latest digital tools, key initiatives, and collaborative efforts to support aviation industry recovery, innovation, resilience, sustainability, and operational solutions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. These topics were also discussed as part of ICAO’s efforts to support the implementation of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals set out in the UN’s 2030 Agenda and ICAO’s No Countries Left Behind (NCLB) initiative.

The discussions focused on the theme “Reconnecting the World: A Runway for Aviation Industry Recovery” and included discussions on how ICAO supports Member States in implementing ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) as well as Global Aviation Plans, Regional and National, through support and training activities.

The symposium will also serve as a platform to unite current and future Technical Cooperation Partners, TRAINAIR PLUS (TPP) Programme Members and other industry stakeholders, including but not limited to: Ministries, Directors of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, international and regional organizations, senior participants representing aviation service providers including air navigation service providers, airport operators, airlines, financial and development institutions, human resources and project/procurement departments and academic institutions.

It is expected that international travel demand will increase throughout 2022. However, the aviation industry will continue to face prolonged turmoil on the road to recovery due to a possible resurgence of the pandemic and economic uncertainty. So, this will require unprecedented collaboration such as more data sharing and more digitalization across the industry. Through this conference, ICAO and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of Türkiye agreed on the following focuses: Stakeholders are meeting in Istanbul for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic to address critical recovery priorities and capacity building, as well as adjusting the aviation industry to become more flexible in the long term. The event will also focus on the importance of strengthening partnerships for support activities and finding new training opportunities post-pandemic.

Representatives of the Vietnam Aviation Academy attending the conference included Dr. Nguyen Thi Hai Hang, Director of the Vietnam Aviation Academy and Dr. Tran Thi Thai Binh, Head of the Department of Aviation Economics and Deputy Head of TrainAir Plus. Within the framework of the conference, the delegation contacted and worked with key partners such as ADP Ingénierité (France), Boeing (USA), ACI (Airports Council International – Canada), Incheon Airport (Korea), Civil Aviation Training Center (Thailand), GMR Aviation Academy (India) and TAV Academy (Türkiye) on the potential for cooperation in global aviation training programs to support, improve the capacity of employees working in the aviation industry in Vietnam as well as in the region.
