Lecturers of Vietnam Aviation Academy designing 3D airport models for student training
According to Dr. Luu Van Thuan, Head of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, in reality, airports always ensure a high level of security, so it is very difficult for students to practice directly.
From this reality, lecturers of Vietnam Aviation Academy modeled 3D airports and used virtual reality devices to simulate airport operations for research and teaching. Accordingly, lecturers of the Academy have carried out research projects on 3D digitization of the entire airport using software to model images of aircraft, terminals, runways, parking lots, etc. and used virtual reality technology devices for students to practice. Students must operate aircraft towing vehicles, passenger cars, ladder trucks, etc. on 3D models that ensure technical and safety standards of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, helping them become familiar with the control rules and safety when using the vehicles.
According to Dr. Phan Thanh Minh, Head of the Department of Aviation Operation, the current equipment of the Academy was sponsored by a French project many years ago. However, to better serve the practice process, the faculty’s lecturers have modeled Tan Son Nhat Airport in 3D based on map documents and actual images from the airport. Dr. Minh said that modeling the airport needs to ensure the most realistic images, so the process of adjusting and combining images takes a lot of time. However, this brings a better experience for students. “Students in their third year will practice air traffic control activities,” said Dr. Minh.
