FACULTY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES: CALER 2024 CONFERENCE – A FORUM ON RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

On the afternoon of August 21, 2024, the Faculty of Foreign Languages – Vietnam Aviation Academy successfully organized the CALER 2024 Conference (Conference on Advances in Language Education and Research) with the theme “Emerging Trends and Innovations in Language Education.”

The conference was honored by the participation of the Academy’s Board of Directors, leaders of departments and faculties, together with a large number of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages. As the inaugural event in the Faculty’s annual academic series, it affirmed the essential role of scientific research in enhancing the quality of language teaching and training in the context of globalization.

The program was structured into three main parts:

PART 1: RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS
Highlighted reports by lecturers of the Faculty of Foreign Languages included:

  • Exploring English-Major Students’ Acceptance of ChatGPT Usage in English Language Learning at Vietnam Aviation Academy – Ms. Nguyễn Ngọc Minh Thư

  • AI Integration in TBLT for ESP Course: A Survey of Students’ Perspectives – Ms. Lê Nguyễn Ngọc Hiền & Mr. Lê Hoàng Anh Tuấn

PART 2: POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Ten studies were presented in poster format, covering diverse topics such as blended learning in EFL, multilingualism in higher education, the flipped classroom model, formative assessment practices, communicative language teaching in writing, task-based learning in ELT, and other applied issues.

PART 3: IN-DEPTH PRESENTATIONS
Selected research presented directly included:

  • A Comparison Between the Effectiveness of Explicit Grammar Instruction and Implicit Grammar Instruction to Vietnamese Students – Mr. Bùi Vũ Thế Đức

  • Oral Presentation Used as an Alternative Assessment Method in an IELTS Exam Preparation Course at a Language Centre – Ms. Hoàng Thị Quỳnh Như

  • Theoretical Frameworks for Intercultural Communication Competence and Implications for English Education in Vietnam – Ms. Nguyễn Thúy Hằng

These presentations sparked active engagement and discussion among attending experts and lecturers, particularly on the applications of technology, innovations in teaching methods, and the development of intercultural communication competence among students.

The CALER 2024 Conference concluded successfully, laying an important foundation for establishing the Faculty of Foreign Languages’ annual academic forum. It also marked the beginning of the Faculty’s continuing commitment to fostering research, connecting knowledge, and affirming its role in the educational mission of the Vietnam Aviation Academy.
