BEYOND THE TEST 2025 – ADVANCING THE STANDARDS OF ACADEMIC ENGLISH INSTRUCTION
On the afternoon of July 7th, the academic workshop titled “Beyond the Test: Elevating Academic English & Unmasking IELTS Test Misconceptions” was successfully held in Room A301, Campus 1 of the Vietnam Aviation Academy. The event drew enthusiastic attention and participation from a large number of lecturers both within and beyond the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
The workshop was organized with the aim of enhancing academic English proficiency among lecturers, sharing effective teaching strategies, and updating participants on current trends in international language assessment. It formed part of the Faculty of Foreign Languages’ ongoing professional development initiatives, striving to create an open academic space for learning, connection, and shared growth among educators.
The program was conducted in person and included two keynote lectures followed by an open discussion session:
🔸 “Boosting Academic English Skills for University English Learners” – delivered by Mr. Christopher Sheen, an expert in English teacher training. His presentation offered practical insights into developing academic English skills among university students, especially in the context of increasingly demanding learning outcomes and the need for strong critical thinking.
🔹 “The IELTS Exam: Debunking Ten Common Misconceptions among Vietnamese Stakeholders” – delivered by Dr. Nguyen Quang Tien and Dr. Truong Thi Nhu Ngoc, lecturers at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade (HUIT). Their session clarified widespread misunderstandings among Vietnamese teachers, students, and parents regarding the IELTS exam, while proposing more effective approaches to teaching and learning.
The concluding open discussion featured vibrant participation from attendees, who raised thoughtful questions, shared practical teaching experiences, and engaged in lively academic exchanges—creating an atmosphere of inspiration and intellectual engagement.
The success of this event is a testament to the spirit of continuous learning, innovation, and professional growth among the lecturers of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Vietnam Aviation Academy.
