On December 1 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, in collaboration with the Vietnam Aviation Academy, organized an expert workshop themed “Investment Policies for the Development of Vietnam’s Airports and Aerodromes to 2030, with a Vision to 2050.”
The event was held in both in-person and online formats, gathering experts and regulatory agencies in the aviation sector.

Airports as strategic national infrastructure

In her keynote remarks, Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hải Hằng – Project Lead and Director of the Vietnam Aviation Academy – emphasized the need to develop the national airport system with a long-term vision, grounded in scientific forecasting and aligned with the rapid growth of the aviation industry.

She noted that major projects such as Long Thành International Airport, the expansion of Tân Sơn Nhất and Nội Bài, and the development of regional airports can only reach their full potential when supported by “a unified master plan, comprehensive data, and strong inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms.”

Multiple expert perspectives on current realities and challenges

Presentations at the workshop focused on key topics including: investment policies for airport development; resource management for airport planning; opportunities and barriers for general aviation; assessment of the national airport master plan under Decision 648/QĐ-TTg; the application of MLR & LSTM forecasting models; and the need to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms.

Discussions were lively, with numerous recommendations related to resource allocation, PPP models, standardization of planning data, central–local coordination, and strategies for green aviation development. Many experts agreed that Vietnam possesses significant potential but should continue refining policies, operating models, and data standards to meet growing demand.

Towards a forward-looking policy report

In concluding the event, Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hải Hằng acknowledged the constructive feedback and affirmed that the Academy’s research team will consolidate all inputs to develop a practical policy report supporting Vietnam’s airport development strategy through 2050.

The workshop concluded with an optimistic outlook for a modern, integrated, and future-oriented planning mindset—one that will enable Vietnam’s aviation sector to accelerate in the coming decades.
